skinny times

When Sara and Daniel were about five and three we lived in Zarauz for a year. Zarauz is a pretty, small, coastal town, about ten minutes from San Sebastian. We lived in a small apartment with no heat or oven. (Didn´t miss the heat as much as the baking...) When the weather turned warmer, my friends and I would take all our children down to the beach after school. Once there, the children took their uniforms off and started splashing around in their underwear, while the mothers sat along a wall watching, gossiping and eating the children´s after school snacks. It felt like a scene from an Italian film (...or a Spanish film...). I remember often thinking at the time that, "it doesn´t get much better than this..."

I think it doesn't get better than the beach and the endless fun and play it offers kids, while mothers chat!

sweet! it DOES sound like an Italian movie...talk about idyllic, and real, and unpretentious simple joys...~sigh!~

the part of Jane would be played by Monica Belucci of course...and i love Daniel's Converse sneaks...i just got some in that classic canvas shade as i was inspired by you...circa last summer!!

Zarauz! I've spent my summers at Zarauz most of my life. Still do. Some of my family live there... And sometimes I have that same feeling... it doesn't get any better. Especially on a late afternoon on a sunny, brilliant day. Oh, no... Now I miss it!

sounds like something out of a fellini flic - very cool! when i was in st. lucia the kids shimmied up the coconut trees, grabbed the giant green balls of fruit, shimmied back down again, cracked them open, and ate, letting the juices drip down their skin... loved it - and to think we have to go to the supermarket and look in the "organic" section~ for stuff which has been shipped across the country (or from another country!) have a perfect wednesday and say "hey" to your cute family!

What a gorgeous post - and a reminder what lovely times can be had no matter your situation. This is a great reminder in these challenging economic times.
