corner view "menu del día"

I find that the majority of restaurants in the Basque Country all serve the same dishes. I always joke that I never have to look at a menu, because I already know what´s on it... Mixed salad, vegetable medley, blood sausages, beans with chorizo, fish, lamb, steak, rice pudding, egg custard, and apple pie.... The locals think that they have the best cuisine in the world, so why bother trying anything else... Even the McDonald´s ended up closing... (OK McDonald´s is a poor example- but you know what I mean...) The following is Daniel´s school lunch menu for this week.... but it could be any restaurant´s menu del día...

White beans with vegetables, chicken breast, fruit.
Fresh peas, steak with fries, yogurt.
Potatoes with chorizo, pork chop, fruit.
Vegetable medley, fish, yogurt.
Lentle soup, fish, fruit.

...My kingdom for some Pad Thai....

Next week´s theme is "corners of your home." I got this idea from Caitlin when she posted corners of her home a while back. So thanks Caitlin for the idea!

P.S. Thanks for all your well wishes! They really made me feel better!
¡Dos besos muy gordos!

beautiful photo. I know what you mean about the food. And the thing I miss the very most when I travel in Europe is spicy food. I can't go without it for more than a few days!! One day I will even be organised enough to do a Corner View of my own. xoxo

I love the photo.
I'm serving Pad Thai - you gotta come and join me!!!
Happy Day.

Jijiji! You're right, Spanish always think that there is no point on trying other food! When I fist moved to England, I couldn't believe the variety of restaurants you can find here! :)
I'm sorry you're sick, hope you're feeling better!

Not bad for a school lunch menu, or do they eat at the restaurant:)?
PS - what happened to the "menu AL dia"?

That school lunch is incredible! The things they serve our children here may as well be pure salt, sugar, fat, and cardboard.
McDonald's went out of business there?
Hahahahaaa! That poisonous chain just keeps popping up here in the states.
Will you be celebrating Thanksgiving this year?
Happy Thanksgiving, anyhoo.
I'm thankful for your blog :+)

It is funny that it is all the same because when I lived in Switzerland I thought the food was all the same. Not much diversity. With that sad, I didn't gain any weight when I was there because I just got tired of eating the same choices. I wish American school menu's sounded more like your sons. The junk they feed the children here is just gross.

I can understand missing variety, but really that school menu is better than the ones at any of the schools I ever went to. I can't imagine any of my schools serving steak.

grass always greener... ei?
how many would love to have basque grub on the menu on a daily basis. consider yourself a lucky gal ;)

however, I see what you mean regarding asian food (for example) being scarce. I reckon you get that everywhere in "gourmand" areas; france, italy, spain, even at regional level! but also in asia itself (reverse effect.)
I call it culinaire dogmatism (basically because that's what it is) but anywhere that can push macd's out of business gets immediately in my good books. ha ;)

Have a good week, dearest Jane!

i´m not much of a food person. my favorite meal is anything (vege) someone else has made.
and it´s even worse when i´m in the middle of something with my work.
i forget to eat.

your photo is perfect- i could eat it!

Pad Thai exists in great quantities in my "kingdom." Too much of a good thing makes it easy to ignore.

I would love to have my son's school lunch menu look like yours; ours is an embarassment - way too many cheap carbohydrates. "Salad" (nutrient deficient iceberg lettuce) is always placed on their trays and rarely eaten - that's what counts for a green vegetable. Your school menu looks well-rounded. Ahh, "my kingdom for a healthy school lunch menu."

Now I'm off to view more Corner Views - I suspect I'll need a napkin (servet), fork and knife. Buon Appetit. Thanks for hosting.

One of my paintings in this exhibition is called "the menu", and it is about how all restaurants have the SAME menu, it's AMAZING. But try telling it to a Spaniard they will be shocked and appalled.

pad thai is yummy! Unlike where you are, here menus are all different.

Deniz said...

Hi Jane! Thanks for stopping by and posting earlier today. I just posted the corner view 2 seconds ago. I know--it's late in the day, but since I include it as part of my photo-a-day challenge, I needed part of the day to put it together! Thanks to this challenge, I had an excuse to go out for lunch. :o)

Your photo is so peaceful and clean looking. I want a sip of water! And the menu sounds wonderful, but as in anything, variety can be a good thing. I get tired of the same old "homestyle" burgers, fries, and so on that we get all over the place here.

ha was reading this and started smiling and thinking of ya post! I assume you know Luisa's blog but, should you not, get yourself round there. like. now. it's the best.

Glad to hear I served in some inspiration. I hope it gets me off the hook for tomorrow's CV, sorry I have been slacking lately. Life get's too busy sometimes, and it's all I can do to remain creative.

I will be back soon though. (I hope)

Also I laughed at the comment about Pad Thai. There's a Thai place by our house that I constantly crave.

Love the table and place setting. I have found Italy to be the same. They eat the same thing every day pasta, fresh vegetables and some type of meat with a bit of cheese and fresh fruit. I still love it though.

On one of our trips I tried to make Mexican food for my Italian friends. I couldn't find the right ingredients. There was no cilantro or tortillas or jalapeno peppers.

I find it so odd that Italians for the most part have never eaten Mexican food. Until I found Italy Mexican was our favorite food.
