corner view "typical architecture"

The president´s abode...
15 century...

Vitoria is a "small" town that has grown a lot over the past 30 odd years. Unfortunately, with fast growth comes a lot of controversial decisions.... i.e. tearing down beautiful mansions to make way for apartment buildings. Vitoria is rich in history and some of its grand architecture dates back to the 14th century. (The town dates back to the 12th century.) You´d think I´d be used to it by now, but it still doesn´t cease to amaze me...

Next week´s theme is "spring"

I´ll be back tomorrow. I´m planning on making a big pot of coffee and then popping around for a visit. Save me some cookies ... :)

Like you, I doubt I'd ever get to used to that on a daily basis. And that is such a shame - can't they just build elsewhere? Sigh. Gorgeous photos, as usual!

I love the old building of Europe. We really have nothing like it here because our country has only been settled for 200 years old.
I think that's what's so fascinating to me buildings are older than the country I live in.

Magnifique ! I'm on my way to visit you ;)

Beautiful buildings. Love the balconies. I love to see new architecture alongside old, but its such a shame when these beautiful buildings start to disappear.

Lisa said...

I can just imagine the stroll through the buildings and enjoying the details in the architecture.

Vitoria always amazes me when I see it in your pictures or ibb's.Its architecture looks beautiful.
Big kisses from Paris, dear Jane:)

I love too ancient architecture and your pictures are wonderful. Too bad they have to destroy it sometimes :-(

In Paris you still can see beautiful buildings too.

I would be inspired to write a novel if I were surrounded by 12th to 15th century architecture. I think my imagination would run away from me! It boggles my mind that an old and ancient mansion would be demolished to make room for an apartment building though! argh!

That would be awful! I realize people have to live somewhere, but another solution must be found. Beautiful photos.

Lovely architecture! Don't worry, we replaced a lot of our old architecture with 1960s concrete monstrosities!!

Cate said...

i would never get used to that architecture either, jane. my artist friends used to wax poetic and get all dreamy eyed when they talked about spain. i haven't been there yet. these are beautiful!!!

I would get lost for hours just wandering around staring at all the beautiful buildings! I'm sure there would be a bit of a sore neck in the morning as well!

We have a place called Victoria too that has similar condos. However, here in my hometown there is a lot of space between buildings, and therefore seeing condos such as these makes me feel claustrophobic. sorry. I like the creativity of the structures though.

I love that you say it never ceases to amaze you. I have that here too. particularly now I don't live bang in the middle of the old centre any longer. every time I cycle along one of the older canals (more or less on a daily basis, really) I still have that.

here's to never losing the ability to admire in awed silence :)

The buildings are gorgeous, that's wonderful to always be in awe...

hmm...what kind of cookies to leave for you? now many treats in Japan have 'sakura' (cherry blossoms) in them, so I'll leave some of those...

Beautiful town, even with the changes it preserves that old spirit present in most ancient europeans towns.
You're right, we New World people never get used to this things; after 30 years, I still looks as if for the first time the Colosseum when I get off the Metro station!
As you can see this week I skipped CV. Will you forgive me? I am going to visit all, and maybe I will post a belated CV!

Jane~ Gorgeous buildings! Thank you for adding me to the Corner View. I just wanted to mention... a wise shoe salesmen once told me that the larger the foot, the sexier the woman. Yes! I have had fun reading your past posts...

What a lovely place you call home, Jane! I would hate to see that wonderful architecture give way to modern high rises. It is full of charm and beauty.

Such beautiful architecture... I visited Spain two years ago, and I loved all the old buildings, the narrow streets, and the window boxes with flowers. Thanks for taking me down memory lane with these photos - and thanks for visiting my blog today! : )
