corner view "holiday"

The holidays in Spain start at Christmas and end on the Three King´s Day, which is January 6th. It´s a time where family and friends get together to eat, drink, and be merry. There are not many traditions, most families make their own. (The one common theme is deciding on whose side of the family to spend dinner and lunch. But I guess that´s traditional every where.)

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day lunch; Lots of food, wine, and the King´s speech on television.

New Year´s Eve and New Year´s Day lunch; Lots of food, wine, and at a little before midnight everyone turns on their televisions to listen to the 12 chimes of the Puerta del Sol´s clock in Madrid. Then, at midnight, they eat 12 grapes, one for each chime, to bring in the New Year.

Three King´s Day; Lots of food, wine, and children wake to presents left in their shoes by the three kings.

(This is Roscón, the typical cake eaten on The Three King´s day... There is a little toy hidden in the cream of the cake. Whoever finds it, has to pay for the Roscón. The kids each had a piece, and then I ate the rest... Which is probably why I found the surprise...)

Next week´s theme comes from Brinja, by way of Cabrizette. The idea is "what we are wearing." So how about if we call it, "your style." Thanks Cabrizette!

Happy Corner View!

Oh that rosco de reyes!!!! I really missed it this year since we stayed in Norway for the holidays. However we did eat our grapes on new years eve :)

The perfect holidays !!! I want to spend my next holidays like that !!!

Have a nice day Jane !

some stuff sounds pretty familiar but it varies per region (tradition-wise). where I come from, if the little "surprise" is in your piece of "tortell de reis" you get to wear the crown; however, were you to bite into a broad bean, then you pay!
I have to say I really dislike those canned grapes. sorry, but that shouldn't be allowed. a new thing for me and I prefer the fresh ones with pits and all. ;P

either way, it seems a good time was had by one and all. good shots.

Dear Jane,

I've so inpolite to start CV-ing myself starting this year. I love the concept very much.

Happy CV-ing in 2010!

You have to pay for the Roscon up in the
North??

In Madrid, the one that finds the toy is the king and rules the house for the day.

My mum got it...oh my...

:D

My CV is on.

Besotes!

Did you succeed to eat the twelve grapes at midnight? Nice tradition!

Lovely pictures! I still have roscón at home, the kind with no cream and... it's still rather fresh! (It makes me wonder how many food additives it has...) Besos

So are your photos, Jane. And that cake looks so god I'm suprised the kids got to have any. BTW, I picked up some dried mango at Dean& Deluca. Oh my!!! Every piece was so good. I wish I'd splurged and gotten 2lbs of it. I'm headed back next month. I found out there is a Tim Burton show at MOMA!!!!! GO-ING!!!!

Mmm..that cake looks delicious! And I love those little green dishes on your table. Sounds like the holidays are celebrated in high style in Spain.

On an unrelated note, I decided to make my blog invitation-only after I got some inappropriate comments the other day. I would, of course, love for you (and all the Corner Viewers, really) to keep reading. If you want to be on the list, just email me at www.thekeepingtime@gmail.com Thanks!

It sounds like wonderful holidays! My daughter kept telling me we were missing all the things we were supposed to do for luck on New Year's Eve. She didn't know about the grapes, but she complained that we weren't eating black-eyed peas. She also said that the tradition in Peru, where she spent the New Year a couple years ago, was to wear yellow underwear for New Years.

Oh I just fall in love with the green glasses !!!!Ir was under the heat and air con here, but exactly the same way !!!

If I say wow every time, I would sound corny but I'm developing this inferiority complex looking at your pictures. They are excellent! Not just the quality of print but content. Good work Jane.

I am also excited about next week! It is tough but challenging. I am for it. Thank you Brinja. And Jane.

Spain is a great country for celebrating the Christian holidays. I remember the Easter marchers in their Ku klux Klan outfits. Christmas isn't really celebrated here in Oman. In fact the only place I've been where it is celebrated less is Saudi Arabia, and there it is illegal.

Wow, I loved hearing about that. So cool! And I think I have found my favorite picture you have even taken! The legs in the snow. I just love the moment you caught!

I'm happy to have the return of Corner View. Your stories and pictures are Awesome as usual. :>) I must say that I have never seen canned grapes (unless they're part of a fruit cocktail): a can containing only grapes? I like the sound of that tradition though.

Thanks for continuing to host this creative project. I'm off to have more viewing fun now...

looks like a much nicer and authentic way of spending the holidays... more emphasis on family and friends, less on the dumpsters of stuff from Toys R Us. looks like you had a great time even if you had to fork over the dough for the cake!

"imaginary friends"? what, there's no word for "fan club" in spanish?

I most definitely had no idea what the Spanish traditions were-- what a lovely way to learn. Thanks! And thanks for coming up with this whole Corner View thing, too :)

Jane, lovely pictures and nice to hear about Spanish traditions. The yummy cake reminds me of the King cake at Mardi Gras in New Orleans that has a bean or a plastic baby baked inside. The person getting that has to have the next party with the next King cake.

this CV list has grown so long! Do you visit everyone, Jane?? (So that you know, I'd be very upset if you didn't visit me:)). About your holidays, I forgot you had royalty there, it must be something to have the King speak to you!

I've never seen canned grades (except in fruit cocktail)!

lamediterrània said...

In Valencia we put a bean and a little toy in the roscón. Who finds the bean must pay and who finds the toy is suposed to be the king of the day:)
I think Spanish Christmas'traditions are lovely, I love the one about the grapes, but I always choked on the pits!
We had to eat those canned grapes in Italy without the strokes and I swear they were the worst grapes I've ever tasted!!

Loved your pictures, as I always do.
Big besos :)
